CDL

Commercial Driver's License — the license a driver must hold to legally operate a commercial vehicle such as a semi-truck.

CDL stands for Commercial Driver’s License. It’s the credential that authorizes someone to drive and operate heavy commercial vehicles like tractor- trailers, and it involves more testing and stricter standards than a regular driver’s license.

A base CDL can be extended with endorsements that permit specific work — hauling hazardous materials or operating tankers, for example. For a dispatcher, knowing which drivers hold which endorsements determines what loads each truck can legally be assigned.
