Trans-Load

Transferring freight from one trailer or container to another to continue its journey.

Trans-loading is moving freight out of one piece of equipment and into another to keep a shipment going — for example, shifting goods from a shipping container into a truck trailer, or consolidating loads for the next leg.

It’s a common step in intermodal freight, where cargo changes modes along the way, and at warehouses that combine or redistribute loads. The handling happens at a dock or transfer facility, and each transfer adds a bit of time and handling risk.
