Claim

A formal demand for compensation — usually from a shipper over lost or damaged freight, or from a carrier to its insurer after an accident.

A claim is a request for money to cover a loss. Most often it’s a shipper seeking payment for freight that arrived damaged or went missing, but a carrier can also file a claim with its own insurance company after a wreck.

Documentation decides how a claim goes. The bill of lading and a signed proof of delivery establish what condition the freight was in and when, which is why dispatchers push drivers to note any damage at pickup and delivery rather than after the fact.
