COI

Certificate of Insurance — a document from an insurer confirming that a specific company, such as a carrier, holds an active policy.

COI stands for Certificate of Insurance. It’s a formal document issued by an insurance company confirming that a particular business — a trucking company, for instance — currently carries coverage, and it lists the types and limits of that coverage.

Brokers and shippers routinely ask a carrier for a COI before releasing a load, using it to confirm the carrier holds adequate cargo and liability insurance. It’s a quick, standardized way to verify a carrier is properly protected.
