Liability Insurance

Insurance that covers the damage or injury a trucking operation causes to other people or property.

Liability insurance covers harm the carrier causes to others — for example, injuries or property damage from an accident the truck is responsible for. It protects third parties, and by extension the carrier, from the financial fallout of a crash.

It’s distinct from cargo insurance, which covers the freight being hauled. Carriers are required to carry liability coverage at set minimums, and they prove it to brokers and shippers with a certificate of insurance.
