Logbook

The record of a driver's working hours — driving, on-duty, off-duty, and sleeper-berth time — kept to show Hours of Service compliance.

A logbook is where a driver’s time is recorded: hours spent driving, on duty but not driving, off duty, and resting in the sleeper berth. It’s the evidence that a driver is operating within legal limits.

Traditionally kept on paper, logbooks are now largely automated by the ELD, which captures driving time directly from the truck. Either way, the logbook is what enforcement checks against the Hours of Service rules during an inspection.
