Freight

A catch-all term for goods being transported commercially — by truck, rail, ship, or air.

Freight is the general word for commercial goods in transit, no matter the mode moving them. When a dispatcher talks about booking, rating, or covering freight, they mean the loads themselves and the business of moving them.

It’s used interchangeably with cargo, and it spans everything from packaged consumer products to loose bulk freight. The type of freight determines the equipment, handling, and rate for a given load.
